favicon.ico fun

I’ve been playing with favicons, you know, the little pictures that some websites have near their url on your browser. I had a yellow dot, but I didn’t particularly like it. I at least need to change the background to clear from the present white.

I read that some browsers will accept a gif as a favorite icon, but you need to use code in your html header to tell it where to go look for it. The other thing you can do is rename say example.gif to favicon.ico and just stick it in your root folder. That’s what I have done here, but if you have been here before, you will likely have to clear your browser cache and reload the page. I got the new, temporary icon, and I’ll insert it fullsize below.

(REMOVED, it got annoying. See it at Wikipedia) —> I got it here, and it’s not too annoying shrunk down to 16×16 pixels.

Earlier, an animated gif “proof of concept” that I nixed.

extra bonus annoying It’s extra bonus annoying as a favicon.ico

Good old ugly “little yellow dot”.

yellow dot If you see something like this up there in the url box, you would need to clear your browser cache and reload the page to participate in the experiment.

This is mostly a test to see if an animated gif will work, and it works just fine on my Firefox 1.0.7 installed over MEPIS live CD (hd install). but what about your system? Could you leave me a little feedback? Something like ?Lynx on a Knoppix live CD, no support built in? or “MS windows 3.1 with Netscape 1.0, it’s broken” would be great. Thanks.

Update 2005-10-1: I’m done playing around, 16k gif icon removed.
