Hmm, I wish you had told me the name of that file before I spent an hour digging it up myself. I've got the one Debian installed, now I've got to boot knoppix and get that one.

By skimming the Debian file, I did indeed confirm that I was using the ‘nv’ driver. No idea what knoppix does to get the video card to work but I'll find out.

Hmm, I don't actually have any nvidia cards lying around at the moment, but in the past I've had good luck using the open-source 'nv' driver. Since you said you're using Debian, I assume it's set up to use 'nv' as well, unless you specifically installed the closed-source Nvidia drivers.

Got your xorg.conf file handy?

Over at mdmm.com they have a pdf file. In it, they describe my problem.

page one, item two:

"NO – If there are black, yellow, orange or other colored stripes across the display or other problems with the display as the computer is booting up, please contact technical support."

That's my problem to a tee, so we register and try the email support thingy.

I guess I should have said something. I've got a nVIDIA g-force4 MX 440.

I'm pretty sure the drivers are non-free, and I understand that there is some kind of "wrapper" code to get them to work on my system
