Sudden Uncivil Libertarian Syndrome

Sudden Uncivil Libertarian Syndrome is what happens when left-leaning publications and journalists suddenly become angry strict “original meaning” constitutional scholars.

Jay Willis at GQ:

Q: …what is an executive order, exactly?

A: Broadly speaking, an executive order is a decree issued by the president that directs members of the executive branch to do what the president says. Executive orders aren’t run-of-the-mill instructions, though—they carry the full force of law. When Congress wants to get something done, they enact a bill into law. When it’s the president calling the shots, he issues an executive order.

Q: Hold on a sec. I thought only the legislative branch was allowed to make law.

A: That’s not a question, but we’ll let it slide, since you’re on the right track…

(emphasis mine)

What makes this rolling on the floor funny is that I can count the number of executive orders (or “Presidential Memorandums” by another name) from Obama over the last eight years that the media openly and loudly objected to (or questioned their constitutionality) on the fingers of a stubby amputated arm.

You can tell from the first two weeks that there will be plenty more of this kind of outrage over the next eight years. No honeymoon with the media.

While the media openly questions the constitutionality of the executive order, while they persist in calling it a “ban” and avoiding the word “temporary”, when they claim it targets Muslims despite not explicitly calling out that religion, when they try to manufacture in your head an idea that refugees have a right to emigrate to the USA, this is the one thing they’re going to avoiding talking about:

(f)Suspension of entry or imposition of restrictions by President

Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.
