WordPress 2.2.2 and Subversion

It’s time yet again to do the WordPress upgrade. I did a clean install for version 2.2.1, but this time I got a chance to use Subversion. I just went into my blog via ssh and then issued one command. Total elapsed time 30 seconds. Done.

Can’t beat that.

Trackbacks and Pingbacks seem to be working.

Ever since my host had a major outage (actually, they colo, and their provider had a massive power failure), the trackbacks and pingbacks seem to be working.

I never realized how much the giving and receiving of pingbacks motivated my writing. Perhaps now I’ll be motivated to finished that series of heath care posts I was writing.

I’d consider getting my own server rackmounted somewhere, but I’d have to get a lot of utility out of it to justify the cost. The cheapest hosting I can find where I have root on my own box seems to be the many Mac mini colo plans, but they end up being at least $35 a month and I’d have to provide the Mac mini myself.

My current provider, NearlyFreeSpeech.net, handles my current hosting needs at a cost of 5-7 cents a day. I expect to get away with a total hosting bill of <$25 for the entire year unless I get slashdotted or something (and in that case, I might get charged an extra one time fee of $10 or so.) So I have no plans on going anywhere anytime soon.

WordPress 2.2.1, a new subdirectory, and things are broken.

So I’ve upgraded to WordPress 2.2.1 and moved the blog to a new subdirectory. Yea, I know things are broken. Fscking mod rewrite mischief or something is giving me a headache.

Update 24jun07: Specifically, the problem is that the old feeds and links still work. The mod rewrite mischief is suppose to rewrite the URLs to the new entries (in th /blog/ subdirectory). At least everything still works, but I’m worried what the search engines will think now that there’s not a proper redirect in place.

Trackback is busted and a Mod Rewrite Cheatsheat

Well, as far as I can tell, my blog’s tracback/pingback function is somehow broken. So sometime this weekend, I’ll be tearing into the guts of the blog, doing a fresh install. I may do some mod rewrite mischief at the same time too. I’ll probably pick another lame ass template, hopefully something a bit more readable.

Here’s a pretty nifty cheat sheet on Apache mod rewrite. It looks like the author has a few more cheat sheets on different topics that I need to check out too.

WordPress 2.2 & Subversion

I just did an upgrade to Wordpress 2.2 with the help of subversion

It seems that everything worked. Holler if you see anything broken, please.

Subversion holds the promise of having future WordPress version upgrades to be as simple as issuing a command on the command line:

$ svn sw http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/tags/2.2.1/ .

..for a possible future WordPress 2.2.1 version. Of course, to be able to use Subversion, you must have a hosting provider that gives you command-line access to your web server, and also you need to ensure that the provider has the subversion (http://subversion.tigris.org/) (svn) client installed.
